GOSHEN – The Orange County Legislature’s Republican Caucus has responded to allegations against Chairwoman Laurie Tautel, who has been accused of shoving a co-worker during a dispute, and said she may have to step aside if the claims are founded.

The county’s Human Resources office has launched an investigation into the incident, which occurred late last month after a legislative meeting.

“We find the reports of physical workplace abuse by Chairwoman Tautel extremely worrying,” the Republicans wrote in a joint statement. “Violence has no place in our political process or workplaces. Tirelessly serving the people every day, county staff deserve a safe and welcoming work environment. The Legislature and county government must be speedy and transparent with their investigation. The honest, hardworking people of Orange County deserve representation that reflects their values.”

The Republicans added that “if these allegations prove true, we will need to have an open discussion about the future of the leadership.”

Tautel, a Democrat, did not immediately return a message seeking comment for this story on Thursday night.

Sources said Tautel allegedly pushed a legislative staffer in front of office personnel because she was “pestering” her about a legislative matter. The victim subsequently filed a complaint with Human Resources.

Tautel was named chairwoman of the Legislature in January. She is the first Democrat to hold the position since the late Roxanne Donnery of Highland Falls, who was elected to the post in 2009. Tautel also represents Highland Falls.
