NEWBURGH – The Newburgh City Council is in the early stages of debating possible creation of a charter review commission.

A commission can be formed in one of three ways: the mayor may create it; city council may create it; or a petition signed by a percentage of city residents may call for a commission.

It could take up to two years to review the structure of city government.

The last time a charter review was conducted was over a decade ago.

No council member has stated their personal opinion about what a commission would review.

Several city residents have come to recent city council meetings calling for creation of a commission.
