KINGSTON – By a 19-to-4 margin, Democrats control the Ulster County Legislature; however, leaders of both parties pledged on Wednesday night to work together for the betterment of the county and its residents.

Republican Minority Leader Kevin Robert said lawmakers must focus on affordability, fiscal responsibility and the future of homeownership in the county.

“As we approach our nation’s 250th birthday, we are reminded that the strength of this country comes from the strength of our communities. Our responsibility here is simple: to ensure that Ulster County remains a place where families can build their lives, where seniors can remain in communities they helped build, and where the next generation has the opportunity to succeed,” he said.

Democratic Majority Leader Abe Uchitelle said all legislators must work together.

“We cannot let ourselves become sidetracked by distractions that are only meant to slow our progress. Let us be the model that we wish to see in Washington. Let us show them in Ulster County what a majority can get done for working class people, not for the ultra-wealthy,” he said.

Housing affordability and fiscal stability remain among the issues facing Ulster and other counties in the region.
