BEACON – The cause of a Tuesday afternoon two-alarm fire in the City of Beacon may have been cigarette smoking.

Discarded cigarette remnants were found in and around the suspected origin on the side of the front porch of the 2 ½ story, wood-framed, single-family home on Rombout Avenue, city officials said Wednesday.

Two occupants of the home were led to safety with the help of bystanders before firefighters arrived. They were transported to Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh by ambulance for treatment of injuries.

City officials said due to the rapid response and aggressive tactics, the fire was contained to the porch area.

Assisting Beacon firefighters were members from the Slater Chemical Fire Company and Rombout Fire Company.
