KINGSTON – Projected Ulster County sales tax income in 2026 is estimated at $182.5 million. That’s less than one percent more than in 2025. But the war against Iran, now with the blocking of the Strait of Hormuz, as well the ongoing tariffs imposed by the White House, could have a negative impact on those numbers.

County Comptroller March Gallagher said it is too early to weigh in on any possible downturns.

“I’ not ready to raise the red flag yet. Early receipts for the year look good but I do think that you should be aware that we could definitely see downturns in sales tax,” she said. “I would not be surprised if we do wind up coming in under budget because of changes in the economy.”

But Gallagher said we have not really felt the impact of that yet.
