LAKE MAHOPAC- Twenty below zero wind chills last month prompted the Mahopac Veterans of Foreign Wars to postpone their fundraiser—Operation Ice Splash 2026.
The event was initially cancelled in January due to a snowstorm and had been rescheduled but with air temperatures in the single digits and wind chills making it feel more like Alaska than Putnam County, organizers postponed the event until today.
It was a year ago when dozens of men, women and children braved 27 degree air temperatures by jumping into Lake Mahopac for the initial Operation Ice Splash—an event that attracted 500 onlookers who cheered as more than 100 participants entered the lake from a dock behind the Mahopac VFW Post while members of the Mahopac and Mahopac Falls Fire Departments dressed in wet suits provided support to the jumpers if needed.
Another large crowd is expected today for the festival which benefits veterans throughout Putnam County.
