LAKE MAHOPAC – A 55-year-old Somers woman has died at Putnam Hospital Center after her Jeep became submerged in Lake Mahopac as she drove across the partially frozen body of water Monday evening.

It was shortly after 5:30 p.m. when 911 calls reporting a woman’s vehicle had entered the lake from Swan Cove, resulted in the dispatch of Carmel Police along with members of the Mahopac and Mahopac Falls Fire Departments, Mahopac Falls and Yorktown Fire Department Dive Teams, Carmel Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Putnam Sheriff’s Department personnel and an Empress Paramedic along with the Putnam Bureau of Emergency Services.

Carmel Police Chief Anthony Hoffmann said Tuesday patrols responded to East Lake Boulevard in an attempt to locate the vehicle. “Arriving officers were flagged down by passers-by advising the Jeep went into an open water area and was submerged 30 yards offshore north of the St. John’s Church Prayer Garden,” said Hoffmann.

Members of the dive teams entered the water and removed the unresponsive woman. The victim, whose name was not made public, was given emergency life saving measures by EMS personnel en route to the hospital where a pulse was regained.

The chief said despite the efforts by police, fire, EMS and hospital staff, the lone occupant of the Jeep later died.

Hoffmann said the case remains under investigation.
