KINGSTON – Ulster County is going to study moving Shandaken Town Hall/highway garage and nearby county highway substation from their current locations to one that is less prone to Esopus Creek flooding.
The county legislature’s Public Works and Capital Projects Committee approved the $40,000 state-funded study.
Deputy County Executive Amanda Lavalle said the issue has been under review for years.
“Getting two highway departments out of the flood plain, one out of the flood way, which is the area of highest velocities and the greatest risks, which are particularly high along that section of the Esopus Creek, which floods kind of spectacularly, with really high, quick flood waters and can cause a great deal of damage,” she said.
The proposal now goes to the full county legislature for approval later this month.
