PAWLING – Smoke was visible for miles Sunday when firefighters from Putnam, Dutchess and Fairfield counties were summoned to a barn fire on Quaker Hill Road in Pawling.

Pawling Fire Chief Everett White arrived on the scene around 10:30 a.m. and requested mutual aid from surrounding agencies since flames were shooting high into air.

The area is not serviced by a municipal water system. As a result water was trucked to the scene from a source half a mile away.

White said the inferno was extremely difficult to extinguish since the barn contained a common attic, plaster and lathe walls and an inner courtyard.

Despite firefighters’ efforts, the barn was a complete loss.

Assisting at the scene were members of the Lake Carmel, Kent and Putnam Lake Departments in addition to the J.H. Ketcham Hose Company, Beekman and East Fishkill Fire Departments as well as the Sherman Fire Department in Connecticut.

No injuries were reported to firefighting personnel.
