NEW CITY – A Spring Valley man has been sentenced to 12 years in state prison after pleading guilty to an eight-count indictment involving a car crash that claimed the life of a four-year-old girl.

On June 14, 2025, Axel Lopez-Santiago, 41, was driving recklessly and at a high rate of speed as he traveled on Old Nyack turnpike in Spring Valley. His vehicle suddenly veered across the double yellow line and into the opposite lane of travel, off the road and onto the pedestrian sidewalk as he neared the entrance to Kennedy Park.

The vehicle struck at least three people before crashing into a tree.

One victim, a four-year-old girl, died from her injuries while a 31-year-old man and five-year-old boy sustained serious physical injuries.

The investigation revealed Lopez-Santiago was drunk at the time of the collision.

The same man was previously convicted of DWI in Spring Valley in August 2018.
