POUGHKEEPSIE – As Dutchess County continues to seek alternatives for sheltering the homeless, County Comptroller Dan Aymar-Blair says a procedure to purchase properties needs to be developed.

The county continues to explore a more permanent location to house the homeless. The administration would like to develop 26 Oakley Street in the City of Poughkeepsie but is facing legal challenges.

Aymar-Blair said the county should develop a property acquisition policy.

“No due diligence has been done on the property before its purchase. It wasn’t compared to other properties. We weren’t aware at the time of the purchase that it was going to take more than $10 million worth of investment, and there are no policies and procedures in the county,” he said.

At present, the county is using for county jail mobile units and motels to house the homeless.
