GOSHEN – A Monroe resident who shot a man as the robbery victim sat in a parked car in Port Jervis,
was sentenced in Orange County Court on Wednesday, February 25 on an assault charge to 13 years in prison followed by five years of post-release supervision.
District Attorney David Hoovler said John Selja, Jr., 32, and co-defendant Andrew Delrio allegedly approached the victim in his parked vehicle at around 9:30 p.m. on May 6, 2025. Selja pulled out a gun and shot the victim when he pushed back as Selja attempted to take property from the man.
A warrant search of Selja’s home resulted in the recovery of a gun that ballistically matched casings recovered from the crime scene.
At the plea proceedings, Selja admitted that he shot the man.
City of Port Jervis Police led the investigation that resulted in the arrest and conviction. Assisting the department were Town of Warwick Police and the Orange County Drug Task Force.
“Illegally possessed guns are deadly weapons in the hands of criminals intent on causing grievous harm to others,” Hoovler said. “This offender’s actions were life threatening, and his violent crimes warrant the significant sentence imposed by the court.”
