CARMEL – Philipstown Supervisor John Van Tassel has been endorsed by the Putnam Democrats to seek reelection this fall along with long time community advocate and business leader Kathy Kahng who is running for a seat on the Putnam Legislature representing constituents in the greater Kent-Patterson area.

Van Tassel was elected to his third term in November. However, because of a newly enacted state election law that moved town elections to even years, he is serving one year rather than two. The election in November will be for a two-year term.

Before being elected supervisor, Van Tassel, who ran unopposed for supervisor in 2021, 2023 and 2025, served for 12 years on the Philipstown Town Board.

In 2023, Kahng ran a close race against three-term incumbent Toni Addonizio, who is now term-limited, creating an opportunity for new leadership.

Kahng has alleged that “Putnam County leadership has allowed the county to stagnate. I have a positive vision to help our community thrive investing in our workforce, supporting smart economic growth, and protecting the environment for future generations.”
