PATTERSON – Boys and girls at the Matthew Paterson Elementary School in Patterson experienced an unusual classroom activity when the five-year-olds were visited by Sweet Potato, Wheezy, Cocoa and Cinderella – four chickens owned by their teacher, Heidi Rolewicz, who instructed her kindergartners about life on a farm.
The Farm Day activities brought reading lessons to life.
“It was a way to follow up on what the children learned,” said the teacher who added, “Farm Day took the vocabulary and the concepts they studied in class and brought them to life.”
Children not only had the opportunity to hold the birds but they worked on a variety of farm chores by milking ‘pretend cows’ that featured a paper cow with latex gloves for udders. The udders were filled with a mixture of water and white paint to resemble milk.
After ‘milking’ the cows, boys and girls also made butter by shaking jars of milk.
Students also reviewed farm vocabulary, such as “shelter” and “crops,” before participating in creative activities that included designing barn craft with different animals and creating vegetable crops out of handprints and craft materials.
