TOWN OF FISHKILL – With a snowstorm expected to arrive later today that will include blizzard-like conditions and the possibility of 12-18 inches of wet, heavy snow, highway departments throughout the Mid-Hudson are prepping equipment that will be forced into service today and will continue to salt, sand, and plow roads through tomorrow.

In the Town of Fishkill, Highway Superintendent Carmine Istvan and his 25 employees are ready to put 15 large Freightliner trucks to work and supplement them with six smaller Ford F-550 dump trucks.  “Initially, we are pre-treating the roads to prevent snow from bonding to the roadways,” Istvan told Mid-Hudson News.  “When the snow starts to fall faster, we will plow the roads for the duration of the storm and salting the hills throughout the town.”

Istvan is responsible for 85 lane-miles of roads that include county roads in town and the Village of Fishkill roads.

Istvan is asking residents to assist his department, within reason.  “Please stay off the road if you can. Please don’t park on a town road. Don’t shovel or blow snow from your driveway into the town roads.”  He also said “Please clear fire hydrants next to your house and if you have trash bins remove them from the road.”
