PUTNAM COUNTY- States of emergency have been declared in communities throughout the Hudson Valley in the wake of the latest major storm to pelt the northeast.

Carmel Supervisor Mike Cazzari issued the alert Saturday for Putnam’s largest township at the same time that Gov. Kathy Hochul pronounced the edict for the entire region.

Cazzari called on residents to “remain off roadways to avoid interfering with emergency response vehicles and snow removal operations. Also remove garbage containers and parked vehicles from roads wherever possible.”

In Brewster Village, Mayor Jim Schoenig noted his emergency decree will remain in effect until Wednesday.

All parking on streets is now banned in greater Brewster with authorized traffic limited to essential emergency vehicles such as police, fire, and EMS.

In Cold Spring, overnight parking on village streets is now prohibited.

Throughout the day Saturday, supermarkets and grocery stores were packed with customers seeking that extra quart of milk or loaf of bread.

At the Tops Market in Carmel, checker Mary Ann said the day reminded her of Thanksgiving and Christmas-eve rolled into one: “At 7:30 a.m. I had more than two dozen customers waiting in line and the rush continued throughout the entire day.”
