BREWSTER – A 36-year-old Brewster man is facing a slew of charges related to the recovery of multiple electronic stun devices, bulletproof vests and ballistic plates as well as imitation firearms seized from safe deposit boxes at a bank in Southeast.
Putnam County Sheriff Brian Hess reported the arrest Thursday of the man whose name was not released after deputies responded to the bank branch after employees reported concerns regarding a customer’s behavior, including frequent access to safe deposit boxes and the wearing of what appeared to be a bulletproof vest while inside the bank.
The sheriff said investigators located the suspect in the Village of Brewster and took him into custody without incident. “At the time of his arrest, the individual was wearing a bulletproof vest and a ballistic helmet and was found to be in possession of multiple large knives and an air-powered imitation firearm,” said Hess.
Search warrants were executed at the man’s residence as well as the safe deposit boxes and as a result investigators recovered several items of concern.
The suspect was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and unlawful purchase of body armor.
Following his arrest, the suspect was transported to Putnam Hospital Center for a mental health evaluation and treatment.
He also faces arraignment in Brewster Village Court at a later date.
