STAATSBURG – A bullet found in the toilet of a bathroom at FD Roosevelt High School brought police to the campus and put the entire school on a “hold-in-place” as a precaution, according to Hyde Park Central School District officials.
A hold-in-place is a safety procedure used when a situation in or near a school requires students and staff to remain in their current locations. Lessons and activities usually continue inside the classroom as long as the door is closed, according to the district.
The building remained in a hold-in-place until dismissal. The school administration worked closely with the Hyde Park Police Department and State Police, who investigated the incident.
Students were dismissed at a staggered pace, allowing for additional supervision during departure. “At this time, there is no information regarding a verifiable threat. We will continue to work with the Hyde Park Police Department as new information arises, and as an additional precautionary measure, there will be an increased police presence at FDR High School tomorrow, Thursday, February 19th,” said District Superintendent Dr. Pedro Roman.
The Hyde Park Police Department continued investigating the incident on Wednesday, and officers were still questioning possible witnesses as late as 5:30 p.m., according to a Mid-Hudson News source.
District officials also stated, “We recognize that incidents such as these evoke feelings of fear and anxiety for our students, staff, and families. Please know that we take these matters with the utmost seriousness, as the safety and well-being of our school community is our absolute top priority. To support our students during this time, support staff are available. We encourage any student in need of support to reach out to our social workers or school counselors, who are ready to assist.”
