CARMEL – Putnam County sales tax dollars declined in January as compared to January 2025.

Commissioner of Finance William Carlin released the county’s initial sales tax report for 2026 Tuesday that indicated $7.5 million was collected during the 31-day period as compared to just under $7.8 million in January of last year.

Carlin attributed the decline to the frigid and snowy weather the region has experienced in recent weeks.

The shortfall follows the December 2025 sales tax windfall of $9.4 million—the most ever collected in any one month in Putnam County.

Last year, Putnam collected $86 million in sales tax dollars and this year Putnam has projected $83.5 million in sales tax by year’s end.
