KINGSTON – The Ways and Means Committee of the Ulster County Legislature Thursday approved a new five-year sales tax sharing agreement between the City of Kingston and the county’s towns and villages.

The current agreement expires at the end of February.

Kingston has already approved the new plan, but two members of the legislative committee sought to limit the new agreement to just one year.

Michael Berardi believes a shortened agreement would give lawmakers the opportunity to compare the expiring agreement with the proposed new one and tweak it.

“I think the current draft is very good. There are people who feel it may not be. Well, doing a one-year and then having the ability to look at it, we can compare one with the other,” he said. “It’s a matter of prudence, being reasonable. It’s like buying a car. You always want to test drive it.”

The new plan would increase the baseline allotments for towns and villages from three percent to 3.5 percent.

The full legislature will consider the plan at its full session next week.
