CARMEL – A strong police presence will remain on the western side of the county for years to come following Putnam’s preliminary approval of a lease renewal authorization with the Village of Nelsonville, allowing for the sheriff’s department to continue using the former Nelsonville Fire Department headquarters as a substation.
By a unanimous vote of the Legislature’s Physical Services Committee Wednesday, the matter was referred to the full legislature for its approval at next month’s meeting.
Committee Chairman William Gouldman welcomed Sheriff Brian Hess to the meeting who advised that County Executive Kevin Byrne had entered into preliminary negotiations with the village for the lease renewal.
In 2021, the county paid Nelsonville $1,000 per month. That was slightly increased to $1,200 for the first year of the new contract; $1,300 for the second year; $1,400 for the third year and $1,500 per month for the fourth and fifth year.
Nelsonville officials also agreed to take over snow and ice removal at the property which was previously undertaken by county highway crews.
Several capital improvements were also provided on the property including a roof replacement and removal and replacement of an out of compliance fire escape.
Legislator Nancy Montgomery, who represents constituents in the greater Philipstown area, said the “western patrol will serve residents of not only Nelsonville and Cold Spring but Continental Village, Garrison, North Highlands and Putnam Valley. It’s great to have a Sheriff’s car in front of that building.”
