GARRISON- Continental Village firefighters realize the value of a municipal water system to fight fires.
After canvassing their district and locating a number of hydrants still impacted from last week’s major snow storm, volunteers contacted homeowners and for those unable to clear hydrants near their places of residency or business, members of the fire service stepped in to assist by shoveling snow around the water source making sure hydrants were accessible.
Continental Village Fire Department Captain Justin Loja said the effort “not only supported our residents who could not clear hydrants themselves but also helped ensure the preparedness of the department and the safety of our community.”
The Putnam Bureau of Emergency Services urges that hydrants be cleared of snow at least three feet on all sides, helping to ensure that hydrants are visible and accessible in the event of an emergency.
