MIDDLEHOPE- Firefighters from several area departments responded to a reported structure fire at the Apple Valley Apartments on Sunday night.

At approximately 11:40 p.m., the Middlehope Fire Department was dispatched to 1108 MacIntosh Place for a possible structure fire.  Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy smoke and fire coming from a second-floor apartment.  A second alarm was quickly sounded as the fire spread.

Mutual aid was requested from Good Will Fire Department of Cronomer Valley, with Middlehope Fire Department placing a ladder truck into operation.  Incident command reported that the fire was extending across the top floor of the building, prompting additional departments to respond, including Air Guard, Winona Lake, Plattekill, and Marlboro fire departments.

Winona Lake firefighters set up ladder operations at the rear of the apartment complex, while crews inside the building used hand lines and hand tools to contain the fire and access affected apartments.  Firefighters continued to knock down visible fire and hot spots as operations progressed.  New Windsor Fire Department was later called to the scene.

Central Hudson was requested to the scene, along with fire investigators.  Town of Newburgh Police assisted with scene control, and multiple EMS units were on location.

Three residents were transported to Montefiore St. Luke’s Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.  Firefighting operations continued through the night and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
