Brewster firefighters remember their hero—Allen Michell

BREWSTER- Allen Michell has answered his final alarm.

The 94-year-old life-long resident of Brewster and 73-year member of the Brewster Fire Department was laid to rest Sunday on a brutally cold day at the Milltown Rural Cemetery in Southeast following a funeral service at the First United Methodist Church in Brewster attended by dozens of firefighters from across Putnam County.

Michell was a life member of the Brewster fire service, serving as dispatcher and captain of the BFD Rescue Squad in his younger days.

He was also deeply involved with the Brewster Little League for 50 years as an umpire, coach and manager.

His wife of 68 years, Helen, recalled how her late husband “raked many infields and treated his teams to chocolate chip cookies and soda after every game.”

His dedication and love for the Brewster FD was evident as former Putnam Commissioner of Emergency Services and ex-BFD Chief Ken Clair recalled: “Allen will be remembered for having an impact on many young boys and girls’ lives. He was an inspiration to all of us both in and out of the fire department.”

The family has requested contributions in Allen’s name be sent to the Brewster Fire Dept., Relief Fund, 501 North Main Street, Brewster, N.Y. 10509 or the First United Methodist Church of Brewster, 81 Main Street, Brewster, N.Y.
