PHILIPSTOWN- Emergency responders from throughout western Putnam County braved arctic cold conditions Sunday and rescued a hiker on the Cornish Trail in the Hudson Highlands State Park off Route 9D in Philipstown.
The Putnam 9-1-1 Center dispatched the North Highlands and Cold Spring Fire Departments along with the Philipstown Volunteer Ambulance Corps for a reported medical emergency.
Authorities said a hiker began experiencing symptoms of a stroke and became stranded on the snow-covered trail, where vehicle access was not possible.
Joined by members of the Putnam Sheriff’s Department and NYS Park Police, fire crews trekked on foot through snow to reach the patient. The hiker was carried down the trail to a waiting ambulance before being rushed to a nearby hospital.
Cold Spring FD Chief Matthew Steltz commended the rescue effort:
“The call served as a reminder that emergencies can happen anywhere, and that strong coordination between local agencies ensures that help can reach even the most challenging locations.”
