ALBANY- A new collaboration between the New York State Workers’ Compensation Board and the State University of New York and City University of New York systems to help injured workers return to the workforce through free community college programs has been launched throughout the state.
The partnership promotes the SUNY and CUNY Reconnect programs, which provide free tuition, fees, books, and supplies for New Yorkers ages 25 to 55 who do not already have a college degree and want to earn an associate degree in a high-demand field. To raise awareness, the Workers’ Compensation Board is sending more than 5,000 mailers to recently injured workers and has launched a new webpage.
Governor Kathy Hochul said the programs are designed to help New Yorkers gain new skills and secure good-paying jobs. Under the initiative, vocational rehabilitation counselors with the Workers’ Compensation Board will work directly with injured workers to identify those who are eligible and connect them with the free college opportunities as they prepare to reenter the workforce.
