POUGHKEEPSIE – City DPW trucks were on the streets late Friday night, spreading salt as a light snow began falling.  The National Weather Service (NWS) forecast calls for a low temperature of nine degrees overnight Friday with a snow accumulation of less than one inch.

On Saturday, the NWS forecast calls for a chance of snow, mainly before 1 p.m. with patchy blowing snow after 2 p.m.  The biggest threat will be the arctic temperatures and gusting winds.

Wind chill values on Saturday during the day in the Poughkeepsie area could fall as low as -9 degrees. Wind is expected to increase Saturday afternoon, with gusts of 38 mph possible.

An “Extreme Cold Warning” is in effect for Saturday night from 6 p.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday.  Low temperatures combining with high wind speeds, could result in dangerously cold wind chills as low as 30 degrees below zero, capable of causing frostbite on exposed skin in less than 10 minutes.  Frostbite and hypothermia will occur if exposed to those temperatures for more than a few minutes.
