MAHOPAC- The Community Room at the Mahopac Library was filled for a town hall designed to help veterans, service members, and their families better understand and access the benefits they have earned by bringing together local, county, and state experts to provide practical information focused on financial well-being, housing, and long-term stability.
The forum was sponsored by the Joseph P. Dwyer Vet 2 Vet Program of Putnam County, a support group that fosters a sense of belonging and reduces feelings of isolation, as veterans can relate to each other’s journeys in ways that others may not. Through peer support groups and programs, veterans provide each other with emotional encouragement, practical advice, and a shared sense of purpose. This network of support not only enhances individual well-being but also strengthens the overall resilience of the veteran community.
On Friday, Dwyer Vet 2 Vet Program Director Megan Castellano explained: “We wanted our veterans to know about the benefits they are entitled to and how to access them.”
A variety of topics were discussed including VA Home Loans & Homeownership Tools, guidance on avoiding predatory lending, understanding buyer broker agreements, and maximizing benefits such as fee waivers and property tax reductions; Property Tax Savings & Exemptions, with updates on state and local exemption laws and step-by-step application guidance.
