CARMEL – Hatred, bigotry, and discrimination in any form are antithetical to the mission and values of the Carmel Central School District. That was the message sent to residents of Putnam’s largest school district on Wednesday by Superintendent Michael Plotkin and members of the Carmel Board of Education in the wake of recent racist, biased and prejudicial symbols and actions reported to school administration.
Plotkin was straightforward: “Acts of hate, whether through symbols, actions, or words, do not reflect the values or character of our school community and will not be tolerated. They have no place in our schools. Each student and staff member deserves to learn and work in an environment that is safe, welcoming, and affirming. Creating and maintaining such spaces is not a short-term initiative; it is an ongoing, never-ending commitment. This work has no expiration date.”
Plotkin and the school trustees have directly communicated with district-level and building-level teams to ensure that every incident of hate or bias is investigated.
In addition, the school is collaborating with the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department to investigate such reports and according to the superintendent: “Any individuals found responsible for acts of hate will be held accountable under the Carmel Central School District’s Code of Conduct and applicable law.”
The school board commended steps being taken by middle and high school leadership to “address issues through continued education, collaboration, and meaningful dialogue. Educational programming helps our students understand the harm caused by hateful behavior and encourages empathy, respect, and civic responsibility. We are also working to offer opportunities to parents to be part of this community-wide conversation.”
Plotkin also reminded parents that they must become a part of the equation: “Children hear their parents talking at home and often repeat things in school. We want our children to develop the highest empathy.”
Both the superintendent and school board said they remain “steadfast in our collective responsibility to ensure that our schools are places where all students feel seen, valued, and safe. We appreciate the partnership of our families and community in reinforcing these values every day. Together, we will continue the vital work of building a culture free from hate and one rooted in understanding, inclusion, and respect for all.”
