CARMEL- Putnam County has declared February 11 as 2-1-1 Day—a service that accesses free and confidential crisis and emergency counseling in addition to disaster, food, healthcare, and insurance assistance.

At last night’s regular monthly meeting of the county Legislature, Legislator Amy Sayegh welcomed Tom Gabriel, President and CEO for the United Way of Putnam-Westchester, who noted that 2-1-1 meets real needs in real time.

Last year 2-1-1 lines across the United States provided 15 million referrals via call texts, chats and e-mails by assisting scores of people with life-changing support.

In Putnam County, 2-1-1 handled thousands of requests for financial assistance to prevent evictions while ensuring sustainability of water and electricity for the county’s most vulnerable residents. 2-1-1 also answered 400 crisis calls last year assisting those with mental health needs.

Sayegh described 2-1-1 as a service that has “its finger on the pulse of our community’s greatest needs by providing health and human services.”
