KINGSTON – Kingston firefighters made quick work of a house fire in the 100 block of Washington Avenue Sunday afternoon.
Within three minutes of the call at about 2:40 p.m., firefighters extinguished the flames and conducted a search for potential fire extension and determined the incident was contained.
Fire officials said the fire resulted from improper thawing of water pipes.
The fire department cautioned residents that if pipe freezing is suspected, it is advisable to engage insured contractors equipped with suitable heating elements.
Hair dryers are a safe option for thawing pipes. Electric space heaters can also be effective when positioned safely away from combustible materials.
A second alarm was sounded to ensure adequate coverage in the city during this response.
Firefighters remained on the scene until 4:30 p.m. to secure openings and drain the boiler and water pipes.
Ulster Hose Company 5 provided FAST coverage at the scene while Port Ewen and Esopus fire departments maintained coverage until off-duty personnel returned.
