COLD SPRING – The Haldane School campus in Cold Spring currently contains what school officials have charged is an “unhealthy mix of car, bus and pedestrian traffic.”
To mitigate the situation and prevent a catastrophe, school buses and cars will be required to use separate routes for entering and leaving the school property as part of a pilot program being implemented in April.
Superintendent of Schools Gail Duffy said the traffic changes will coincide with a voter-approved, $28 million capital project set to begin later this year.
Duffy noted during the development of the plans, architects discovered the potential danger with current traffic patterns.
A transportation audit conducted by Putnam-Northern Westchester BOCES along recommendations from two consultants confirmed the need to address traffic patterns.
As a result, effective in April, buses will only be permitted to enter and exit the district campus from Route 9D, while cars will be required to enter on Cedar Street and exit on upper Craigside Drive and Mountain Avenue.
School officials have also asked the village to increase police patrols during drop-off and dismissal and shift a crossing guard stationed on Route 301 to Orchard Street.
