CARMEL The Carmel Water District No.2 which provides municipal water to the entire Hamlet of Carmel finds itself in a mandatory emergency restriction due to aging infrastructure.
Members of the Carmel Fire Department realize this, and since the hamlet is serviced by a hydrant system, Chief Vincent Ruggerio has ordered the department’s tanker truck to respond to all reported and confirmed fires in order to manage water supply and support sustained fire operations.
Carmel Supervisor Michael Cazzari commended the proactive stand taken by the all-volunteer firefighting force.
“While there isn’t a total lack of water, the infrastructure is currently vulnerable, making community conservation essential for fire safety,” said Cazzari.
He explained that the “Lindy Road tank is being replaced as part of a larger capital upgrade project. This work is expected to continue for several months. The district is currently operating on three tanks: Two on Everett Road and one above Shoprite.”
Cazzari added that an old tank on Everett Road will be decommissioned at the conclusion of the project.
The supervisor commended the chief and his membership for “taking extra precautions, ordering a tanker to every call, ensuring an immediate, independent water supply regardless of hydrant pressure.”
