PHILIPSTOWN- The Depot Theater in Garrison whose motto: “We strengthen the cultural fabric of the Hudson Valley through theater, music, dance, film, and education programs that inspire human connection,” has been granted a 99-year lease for land owned by the town of Philipstown.
The non-for-profit, which partners with the town’s recreation department, hopes to construct a ‘backstage’ building containing props, rehearsals and classes for students interested in lighting, set construction and sound.
The theater located on Garrison Landing in the tiny Putnam County hamlet supports the development of new work while expanding its circle of artists and providing theater education experiences for youth and adults that promote career readiness while making arts more accessible in the community.
The theater is seeking a state grant to construct the building, which will be turned over to the township and leased by the non-for-profit.
The Philipstown Town Board had previously approved a lease for the building but needed a ‘ground lease’ since the state expressed concern there wasn’t a “possessory right on the land.”
