ALBANY – A new bill moving through Albany aims to officially legalize bodega cats in the Hudson Valley and around the state. Introduced by Manhattan Assemblymember Linda Rosenthal and supported by Upstate Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo of Binghamton, the legislation would establish a formal framework for cats to coexist with commerce.

Proponents argue that by standardizing care across the state, New York is finally recognizing a quintessential tradition that help small businesses manage rodents naturally, ensuring these four-legged clerks can keep their jobs without putting a shop’s license at risk.

On the YouTube podcast “Shelter Cats,” they discussed the importance of veterinary care. “The majority of them have never seen a veterinarian unless a rescuer or local organization like us has come in and convinced them to allow us to bring them to a vet to get them proper veterinary care,” one participant noted.

Regular veterinary care for these cats will be a requirement of the bill.
