GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Baby boomers are getting into an age group where driving can be an issue. Robert Sinclair Jr. is the Senior Manager of Public Affairs of AAA Northeast, and he says there are warning signs that concerned family members can look for.
“You know, they hit the wall in the driveway or they run up on a curb when they’re parking, you know, you get a little minor dents and dings.”
He says that taking the keys away from an older driver is very difficult because it threatens the senior’s independence.
“We have to be cognizant of the fact that our skills, our abilities, deteriorate as we age,” Sinclair said.
He says that doing regular stretching routines can extend the senior’s ability to get around.
“You’re using your arms, your shoulders, your hands, your elbows. You ideally should be using your neck muscles to check your blind spots”
Taking an AARP senior driver’s course, for example, is very helpful if you want to drive for a long time.
