GARRISON – Reports of a fire on an Amtrak train at the Metro-North Garrison Railroad station sent emergency responders from western Putnam to the railroad hub.

Garrison Fire Chief Fred Reich, incident commander, said when several train cars began experiencing smoke conditions, conductors sounded the alarm and notified railroad control in Manhattan which contacted the Putnam 9-1-1 Dispatch Center.

Reich said when he arrived moments later, railroad personnel had evacuated all of the passengers on the train. EMT’s and paramedics evaluated all of the passengers in the smoke-filled cars with several being treated on the scene for smoke inhalation but none requiring hospital transport.

The chief said the cause of the smoke was traced to an electrical short circuit.

A relief train was summoned which picked up the stranded passengers allowing them to complete their journey.

Agencies responding to the incident included the Garrison Fire Department, Garrison Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Philipstown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Empress Paramedics, MTA Police, MTA Fire Safety Unit, Putnam Sheriff’s Department and State Police.
