WASHINGTON D.C.- Congressman Mike Lawler (R, NY-17) has introduced legislation designed to strengthen oversight of troubled public housing agencies. The bill, titled the Improving Public Housing Agency Accountability Act, would require annual reports on housing authorities that are under federal monitoring or receivership.
Under the proposal, the reports would include information on whether agencies are complying with federal law, the physical condition of public housing properties, their financial stability, and recommendations for restoring and improving facilities. The legislation is intended to provide Congress with more detailed information about the status of public housing agencies that have faced long-standing problems.
Lawler said the measure aims to increase transparency and ensure that federal oversight leads to meaningful reforms, with the goal of improving living conditions for residents of public housing.
