KENT – William “Billy” Russo, who patrolled the highways and byways

of the greater Lake Carmel-Kent area for some two decades, has died at the age of 73.
The Carmel High School graduate was employed by the Kent Police Department, rising to the rank of detective prior to his retirement in 2000.
Kent Police Chief Kevin Owens remembered Russo Wednesday as a “cop’s cop. Everyone loved Bill. When the chips were down and help was needed, Bill was the guy you called on. Bill knew everyone and was affectionately called the ‘mayor.’”
Russo was also an active member of the Lake Carmel Fire Department for many years.
He is survived by his children William, James, Marissa, Taylor, Tara, Kevin, and Bonnie along with three grandchildren and a brother.
William Russo said his dad’s interests were as “diverse as they were passionate. He found great joy in the roar of a motorcycle, the challenge of trucking, and the thrill of various sports. It was the laughter and love of his grandchildren that brought him the greatest joy. Bill’s presence at family gatherings will be deeply missed.”
His children remembered the family patriarch with the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson: “To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.” They said, “Our father’s life was a testament to this belief, as he touched countless lives through his work, volunteerism, and the love he shared with his family and friends. Bill’s legacy is one of love, service, and commitment. His memory will be cherished and kept alive by all who had the privilege of knowing him. We take comfort in knowing that his spirit will continue to guide and inspire us.”
A prayer service is scheduled for this afternoon at the Cargain Funeral Home in Carmel.
The family has requested in lieu of flowers, donations be made in memory of William Russo to a veteran’s organization of your choice.
