KINGSTON – The country appears to be in a turmoil at present with people of dark complexion and Hispanic surnames being snatched up by masked ICE agents.
Ulster County Sheriff Juan Figueroa says if you commit a crime, whether you are a citizen or not, you will be arrested and if you are undocumented, you will be deported.
But if you are undocumented and a model individual, there should be a pathway to citizenship.
“We’re talking about the individuals that come here for a better life, marry, have American children, actually gave to this country, works and is an asset to our communities; those aren’t criminals,” the sheriff said. He said someone who is working and giving back to the community should not be targeted.
If they are targeted, the sheriff said then, “we will cease to be the United States of America, the land of the free, if that continues.”
