GARRISON- In preparation for the upcoming 250th anniversary of American Independence, Putnam County’s “Revolutionary 250 Committee” commemorated the event with a celebratory gathering Saturday evening at the famed Bird and Bottle Inn in Garrison.
Founded in 1761, the Bird & Bottle Inn predates the American Revolution and later served as a gathering place for patriots and Continental Army forces, a setting for a night filled with re-enactors, period music and patriotic spirit.
Guests reflected on local heroes like Sybil Ludington, “Rifle Jack” and General Israel Putnam, whose courage helped shape the United States and Putnam County.
Former Governor George Pataki and philanthropist George Whipple, both longtime residents and advocates for Putnam are serving as volunteer co-chairs of the Revolutionary Putnam County Committee.
Whipple expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, emphasizing the importance of keeping history alive describing it as “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to engage our community in the story of our nation’s founding. Through education, reenactments, and celebrations, we will bring the spirit of 1776 to life and ensure that future generations understand and appreciate the struggles and triumphs that shaped America.”
County Executive Kevin Byrne joined the festivities reminding those in attendance, “The story of our nation’s independence is deeply intertwined with Putnam County’s history, and it’s an honor to work alongside Governor Pataki, George Whipple, and our County Historian Jennifer Cassidy to bring this anniversary to life. We want to make sure the past isn’t just remembered but experienced in a meaningful way by our residents and visitors.”
