Work is underway to remedy the St. John’s Church Community Room plumbing disaster

MAHOPAC- Parishioners at St. John’s Church in Mahopac are requesting community assistance following a plumbing disaster that flooded the house of worship’s community room, home to the church’s food pantry.

A sewer blockage caused by flushing paper and hygiene products down the toilet resulted in wastewater to flood the social hall causing extensive damage.

On Saturday, Father Szymon Kurpios, pastor of the church, said the resulting contamination required the complete removal of the floor and professional chemical disinfection of the lower level. The flooring had been installed about a year ago at a cost of more than $46,000. Insurance is expected to cover only part of the repairs.

“Something always happens at the least convenient time. We have already cleaned all the dirty areas, removed the damaged flooring, and disinfected the space. We can operate a little food pantry, but we need to renovate the entire floor,” said the priest.

New flooring designed to better withstand potential flooding is being installed and the church is seeking donations to help cover remaining cleanup and restoration costs.

Father Kurpios said the church was “still working with the insurance company to cover some damages. A better floor will cost more, but it will be more durable and secure. I trust in God and the generous people of our parish to help us resolve these issues. We are deeply grateful to our parishioners for their generosity, prayers, and hands-on assistance during this difficult time. Your continued support helps us rebuild and strengthen our parish community together.”
