KINGSTON- The Pike Plan canopies, erected in the 1970s over Uptown Kingston sidewalks, will start to be removed this coming week.

Construction contractor Beam Enterprises of Chester has been hired by the city to remove the canopies attached to the fronts of stores. Demotion is expected to be completed by March 13.

Beam will employ crews beginning on the corners of North front Street moving simultaneously to remove the canopy one property at a time.

When the North Front has been completed, crews will move to Wall Street.

The work will include making the buildings water-tight and leaving them in a presentable condition, officials said.

Fees for all permits and applications for property and business owners to repair facades and for signage will be waived through October 2027 but must follow the standard process for approval.

During the removal process, Uptown parking lots will be free of charge. There will be limited parking on both sides of the street from North Front Street from Crown Street to Fair Street. No parking areas will be indicated by signage.
