POUGHKEEPSIE – The Dutchess County Legislature held its reorganization meeting on Monday night, marking only the second time this century that Democrats have held the majority. The November elections resulted in a flip when the body went from a 15-10 Republican majority to a 15-10 Democratic majority.
Legislator Yvette Valdés Smith (D-Fishkill) made history when she was elected to the chairperson position. Combined with County Executive Sue Serino, it is the first time since the legislature was formed in 1968 that women have served in both positions concurrently. Serino took note of that, saying, “Congratulations as well to Yvette Valdés Smith on her election as Chair of the Legislature. Together, we are marking an exciting moment in Dutchess County Government history: the first time women are serving concurrently as County Executive and Chair of the Legislature. I look forward to continuing our collaborative relationship as she steps into this new leadership role. I know we share a commitment to always serving with the best interests of our neighbors in mind.”
Chair Valdés Smith said, “It is an honor of a lifetime to be elected Chair of the Dutchess County Legislature, and I look forward to working with my colleagues to deliver real results for our residents.” The former Minority Leader continued, saying, “Everyone in our county deserves to live in thriving communities that are affordable, safe, supportive, and equitable. Our new Democratic majority ran on affordability and a commitment to addressing policy to relieve the housing crisis. We are ready. I have successfully worked across the aisle in this legislative body for two terms and will continue to do so. Together, we will be laser-focused on making Dutchess the best place to live, work, raise families, run businesses, and retire.”
, Julie Shiroishi, the former Chief of Staff to Assemblyman Jonathan Jacobson, was appointed to serve as Clerk of the Legislature, and Town of Fishkill Councilman Greg Totino, who previously served as the Fishkill secretary to the supervisor, was named to the Deputy Clerk of the Legislature role.
The Democrats introduced a resolution to remove the current Legislative Counsel, Ian Lindars, and replace him with Democrat Michael Treybich.
Assistant Minority Leader John Metzger sought to have Lindars clarify language in the County Charter regarding appointments, but Lindars declined. “I am unable to offer any legal advice for this specific resolution, as this resolution pertains to me personally, and that would be a conflict of interest,” the attorney said.
The Republicans then tried to table the resolution until they could consult an attorney, but the attempt failed along party lines.
Following a few more minutes of debate, the bill was brought to a vote. Attorney Michael Treybich was named Legislative Counsel, and Lindars was fired from his position in the same resolution.
