COLD SPRING- A 17 acre parcel of land allowing a Revolutionary era Cold Spring family’s commitment to conservation has been donated to the village of Cold Spring.
George and Harriet Hustis’ generosity results from their grandfather’s upbringing and open space protection, according to Cold Spring Mayor Kathleen Foley.
Foley explained: “Their family was highly successful in agriculture — one of the barns from the Hustis Dairy still exists near Glassbury Court on Route 9. Harriet and George’s grandfather had what he referred to as a ‘wood lot’ on Lake Surprise Road — in keeping with their grandfather’s commitment to conservation and open space protection, Harriet and George decided to give it to the village.”
The mayor added that in exchange for the parcel, the village agreed to preserve the forest and dedicate it as the Hustis Conservation Area.
