GOSHEN – Law enforcement agencies from Orange, Sullivan, Rockland, Westchester and Putnam counties will team up once again this year for the region’s Alert Cab Program. A holiday staple of Dana Distributors in Goshen and world-renowned Anheuser-Busch, the program has its roots dating back to 1986.

Over the years it’s grown in popularity and now includes free rides from UBER to those who need it. This year’s message is just as clear as it’s always been. If you drink, don’t drive, said Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler.

“Let’s face it. Over New Year’s 42 percent of all accidents that happen, whether in Orange County or across the United States, will involve alcohol or drugs over the next 48 hours or so. And almost 300 people will die across the United States. Let’s hope that none of them happen here in the Hudson Valley,” he said.

Hoovler emphasized the need to have a designated driver, utilize public transportation or UBER, and simply be responsible to yourself and others.

Brian Strommer, who was one of the many invited guests at the program’s kickoff Tuesday, lost his oldest son in 2010 as a result of a drunk driving accident. As symbolic as it is to ring in the New Year, he hopes people are responsible this holiday season.

“The wake that is felt is widespread and is lifelong for me, my wife, my children and the rest of our family and close friends,” Strommer said. “You have no idea the ripple effect of these decisions.”

Rockland County Sheriff Louis Falco added that law enforcement agencies must continue to be proactive and should take advantage of the Stop DWI money that is available through the state. He said it’s really the only way to get the word out about the impacts of drunk driving.
