ELLENVILLE – A man determined to be suffering from a mental health crisis was convinced to give up after a crisis negotiator from the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office talked to him for a few hours in Ellenville on Sunday, December 28.
The incident began at around 2 p.m. with a report of an armed man with a shotgun barricaded inside a building.
Ellenville Police Chief Philip Mattracion said the man was taken into custody and transferred to HealthAlliance Hospital of the Hudson Valley in Kingston for treatment.
Out of an abundance of caution and because the incident was in a residential neighborhood, the roads were shut down, and residents were directed to shelter in place during the incident.
Ellenville Police were assisted by the sheriff’s office uniform and drone divisions, Ellenville Rescue Squad, fire department and street department, State Police uniform, BCI and drone units, and Ulster County Emergency Response Team.
There were no injuries to first responders or civilians.
