Neither ran nor sleet nor snow: Carmel mail carrier Donna Perlett delivered a package to a residence by trudging through the snow

PUTNAM COUNTY- Mother Nature dumped as much as nine inches of snow on the region during Friday and Saturday morning’s storm and yesterday man and machine alike spent the day cleaning roads and paths of the heavy precipitation.

The National Weather Service reported an eight inch snowfall in Poughkeepsie while New Fairfield in Connecticut, across from the Putnam County border, was dumped with 9.3 inches.

Snowfall totals in Putnam ranged from 5.8 inches in Cold Spring to 6 inches in Putnam Valley and 7.3 inches in Carmel.

The storm wreaked havoc on area roads.  Especially hard hit was I-84 in Dutchess and Putnam and the Taconic State Parkway as it traversed the two counties.

State Police investigated 27 crashes on the two highways, several with personal injury.

On Saturday most libraries and community centers cancelled activities for the day while the clean-up continued.

And the National Weather Service has forecast additional frozen precipitation starting this evening this time in the form of sleet and freezing rain.
