MID-HUDSON VALLEY- As the holiday shopping season wraps up, the New York Department of State is reminding consumers to check store return and refund policies before heading out. According to the National Retailer Foundation, Americans are expected to return nearly $850 billion in merchandise this year, including about 20 percent of online purchases.
“Before making a trip to the store, keep in mind that return and exchange policies vary by retailer,” said Secretary of State Walter T. Mosley. “Taking a moment to review these policies in advance can help New Yorkers save time and avoid frustration.”
New York State law requires stores to post their refund policies clearly in the store or online. While stores aren’t legally required to accept returns, if no policy is posted, they must accept returns of unused merchandise within 30 days of purchase with proof of purchase. Refunds must be offered in cash or credit, depending on customer preference.
Shoppers are encouraged to understand the refund terms, including whether fees apply or whether refunds are given as cash, store credit, or exchanges. Keeping receipts or gift receipts and saving online order emails can make returns smoother.
By knowing the rules and reviewing policies ahead of time, consumers can make the post-holiday return process faster and less stressful.
