NEW YORK – Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is facing historically low approval ratings, according to a new Gallup poll released this month.
The poll, conducted between December 1st and 15th, found broad dissatisfaction with political leadership and the direction of the country, as well as low ratings for Congress and other national figures.
Schumer finished at the bottom of the list, with just 28 percent of Americans say they approve of the job he is doing. Schumer’s performance was the lowest rating of the top national political figures measured in the survey and places him near the bottom of a list that included leaders from both parties.
Schumer’s standing has also eroded sharply within his own party. Only 39 percent of Democrats now approve of his performance, down dramatically from 76 percent two years ago, while a majority, 56 percent, disapprove of the job he is doing.
Schumer’s term does not conclude until the end of 2028, but many have speculated about the possibility of a Democratic primary challenge. Schumer has been in public office for a half-century, first elected to the State Assembly in 1975 followed by the House of Representatives in 1981 and the Senate in 1999.
